science fiction |
The term (often abbreviated to SF) referes to stories and novels in which scientific (wissenschaftlich) and pseudo-scientific calculations and reasonings are characteristic of the plot. Science fiction is set in the future (wissenschaftliche Abenteuergeschichten, Zukunftsroman).
Science fiction deals with robots / synthetic people / supermen / parapsychological phenomena and things that have not happened / space (interplanetary) travel (Raumfahrt) / invasions from space / future wars / future societies and stunning inventions.
It also deals with things that will probably never happen like time travel or adventures in dimension.
Science fiction is an instrument and a medium of social criticism. Early forms of science fiction are the scientific romances of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. |
