Brave New World | Chapter 14

Summary of chapter 14

Dealing with death and the treatment of the dying Chapter XIV / XV

Place:
London, a 1st class hotel-like hospital, a skyscraper for the dying, sixty-storey tower

Atmosphere:
pleasant, bright colours, soft music, TV sceens at the foot of every bed

Attitude towards death:
a normal & natural process, no feelings involved, the dead are made use of for the rest of society by burning their bodies

People present:
nurses, the staff, twin Deltas in khaki uniforms being trained to be death-conditioned, no relatives, rare visitors or old sex partners, no need for people from outside the hospital

the nurses' behaviour:
everyday routine, friendly but strict, explaining the norms of BNW to John

John's state of mind:
helpless, serious, excited to see his mother for the last time, frustrated by the surroundings, the missing privacy, matter-of-fact-attitude towards death, lack of feelings for the dying

John and Linda's relationship:
tries to be alone with his mother, tries to communicate, a last look and pressing of their hands, recollects his happy youth, is shocked at his mother's only remembrance of Popé, her lover, not of her son, feels betrayed, hurt, is jealous of him, hates him as an intruder to their paradise, wants to say farewell and keep good memories, destroys the relation to her by his passion, fear of having killed her by shaking her, is sad and mourning
